Battery Lab Technician

 

Description:


This technician will report to a 1st shift Group Leader and specialize in the safe and orderly preparation and testing of high voltage batteries and related components within a lab environment. This role indirectly affects the quality, durability and performance of electrified vehicles and related products developed by General Motors.

This job is based in General Motors’ Warren, Michigan Global Battery Systems Lab (GBSL-W). This facility uses extensive automation to operate 24/7 with two shifts of personnel, covers over 100,000 sq. ft. on the Warren Technical Center campus and has capabilities to test 108 battery packs or modules and 120 battery cells simultaneously. The facility has testing capabilities including traditional environmental testing, vibration, safety and abuse as well as exploratory development testing. GBSL-W maintains commonality with GM’s battery lab located in Shanghai, China (GBSL-S). The lab and results it produces are used by GM’s growing team of engineers working on advanced batteries and electrified vehicles, in support of the vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.

What You'll Do
 

  • Champion safe test setup for battery assemblies and related components. This includes defining and performing procedures and checks to ensure test results are delivered on-time and with quality.
  • Develop and manufacture special purpose instrumentation, cable and wiring assemblies, laboratory test equipment, and fixtures related to testing of battery assemblies or related components
  • Perform physical duties involving large and heavy high voltage batteries including movement, shipping, and disposal
  • Maintain records on work performed including data collected or analyzed
  • Maintain awareness of Business Plan Deployment goals and objectives, identify and suggest relevant opportunities for improvement
  • Develop, implement, and sustain workplace organization practices
  • Maintain and communicate findings with engineering personnel through verbal or written means
  • Recommend revisions to product or component design as needed
  • Conduct or assist with Safety and Abuse testing as needed
  • Conduct or assist with detailed teardown and analysis of battery cells, modules, and packs
  • Conduct or assist with vibration testing including working above 6 ft and using cranes and rigging to move high voltage properties
  • Able to successfully complete all required UAW GM training courses including respirator, cranes/hoist, Lockout etc.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
 

  • 2 year Associate’s degree or equivalent in the mechanical or electrical field
  • 3 years related work experience
  • Thorough knowledge of complex mechanical and/or electrical concepts, including reading engineering drawings
  • Working knowledge of test automation applications used in a laboratory environment
  • Competence with typical office computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
