Description:
The City of Baltimore is seeking a skilled Welder to join its Department of General Services. Welders in this role are responsible for applying heat to metal pieces to melt, fuse, and form permanent bonds, working under moderate supervision from a technical superior. This is a physically demanding position performed in a repair shop environment, with exposure to welding torches, gases, fumes, and dust, requiring lifting, bending, stooping, and working in awkward positions.
Key Responsibilities:
Apply heat to metal pieces to create permanent bonds through welding.
Inspect welds for bead size and adherence to specifications.
Read and interpret work orders, specifications, and blueprints.
Use gas and electric arc welding equipment safely.
Follow safety protocols and proper procedures for welding operations.
Replace and align parts as needed in repair work.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
Three years of welding experience, with substitutions allowed for additional education or coursework in welding.
Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license (provisional or learner’s permits not accepted).
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with assistance/tools and perform physical tasks in a plant environment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of welding tools, materials, and techniques.
Ability to inspect and ensure quality welds.
Understanding of safety practices and procedures in welding.
Ability to read and understand technical documents and blueprints.
Additional Information:
Mandatory six-month probation period for new hires.
Candidates may undergo criminal background checks and fingerprinting for positions of trust.
Qualified applicants are placed on an eligible list for at least six months.
Financial disclosure is required pursuant to the City Ethics Law within 30 days of hire.

Salary range: $48246—$54490 annually, starting at $48246.
