Deputy Editor

Description:

Vox Media is seeking a Deputy Editor for its Future Perfect section, which focuses on stories about effective altruism, global poverty, public health, animal welfare, progress studies, and emerging technologies. This is a permanent, full-time remote position. The deputy editor will assist in driving daily coverage, overseeing the freelance program, and managing three staff writers. Additionally, this role supports the Future Perfect editor in section management and steps in when the editor is absent.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage and edit three staff writers (Sigal Samuel, Kenny Torrella, Marina Bolotnikova), guiding story selection, editing, and professional development.

• Edit the biweekly newsletter on Processing Meat written by Kenny Torrella.

• Assist the Future Perfect editorial director in setting and maintaining daily and long-term priorities, especially in agriculture and animal welfare.

• Commission and edit pieces for the Future Perfect site.

• Collaborate with audio and video teams for multimedia coverage.

• Maintain high editorial standards while developing big-picture story ideas.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Minimum 5 years editing experience or equivalent.

• Strong managerial philosophy and communication skills; prior management experience desirable.

• Ability to mentor, manage, and edit writers effectively.

• Strong analytical skills and ability to bring sharp angles to stories.

• Experience with research in economics, psychology, sociology, political science, biology/medicine, and computer science is desirable.

• Passion for the mission of Future Perfect and understanding of ethical, social, and global issues.
