Description:

The Director of Project Controls is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for project controls across the organization’s portfolio of renewable energy and utility electrical construction projects. This role leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of standardized project controls processes related to cost management, forecasting, scheduling, progress measurement, change management, risk management, and project performance reporting.
The Director of Project Controls partners closely with executive leadership, operations, project management, finance, estimating, procurement, and other cross-functional teams to provide accurate, timely, and actionable visibility into project performance. This position is responsible for establishing consistent project controls standards, tools, reporting structures, and governance that enable project teams and leadership to identify risk early, improve forecasting accuracy, protect project margins, and make informed business decisions.
The Director of Project Controls will lead the development of a scalable project controls function capable of supporting the company’s continued growth and increasingly complex portfolio of medium- and high-voltage substations, transmission, collection systems, BESS, and other electrical infrastructure projects.
Location & Travel: This position is eligible to be remote, located anywhere in the U.S. Travel to company offices and project sites is required based on business needs.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities 

Develop and lead the company-wide project controls strategy, standards, processes, and governance across the project portfolio. 
Establish consistent processes for project budgeting, cost control, forecasting, scheduling, progress measurement, change management, risk management, and performance reporting. 
Provide leadership with accurate and timely visibility into project financial and schedule performance, trends, risks, opportunities, and forecasted outcomes. 
Establish and maintain standards for project forecasts, including cost-to-complete and Estimate at Completion (EAC), and drive accountability for forecast accuracy across project teams. 
Lead development and governance of project scheduling standards, including baseline schedules, schedule updates, critical-path analysis, look-ahead planning, and schedule performance. 
Develop standardized project performance dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools that enable project teams and executive leadership to identify trends and take proactive action. 
Partner with Project Managers and Operations leadership to identify cost and schedule variances, understand root causes, and develop recovery or mitigation strategies. 
Establish consistent methods for measuring and reporting project progress, productivity, commitments, actual costs, and forecasted costs. 
Strengthen change management processes by ensuring potential changes, scope impacts, cost exposure, and schedule impacts are identified, tracked, quantified, and communicated in a timely manner. 
Develop project risk management practices that improve early identification and visibility of financial, schedule, contractual, and execution risks and opportunities. 
Partner with Finance to ensure alignment between project controls reporting, financial reporting, revenue forecasting, cash flow, and project financial performance. 
Partner with Estimating and Preconstruction to improve the transition of project budgets, assumptions, schedules, and risks from estimate through project execution. 
Collaborate with Procurement to incorporate material commitments, equipment lead times, delivery schedules, and procurement risks into project forecasts and schedules. 
Support project teams during project startup to establish appropriate controls, budgets, schedules, reporting expectations, and performance baselines. 
Establish project controls requirements appropriate to project size, complexity, risk, and contractual requirements. 
Lead, develop, and mentor project controls professionals and build organizational capability as the project portfolio and company continue to grow. 
Drive adoption and effective use of project controls systems, technology, data, and reporting tools while continuously improving data quality and process efficiency. 
Partner with executive leadership on portfolio performance, business planning, growth initiatives, and operational improvement opportunities. 
Foster a culture of accountability, proactive risk management, continuous improvement, and data-driven decision-making.
Education and Work Experience 

Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
Minimum 10 years of progressive project controls, project management, construction management, or related experience, including leadership responsibility.
Experience within electrical construction, utility infrastructure, renewable energy, EPC, or other complex construction environments strongly preferred.
Knowledge and experience with medium- and/or high-voltage substations, transmission lines, collection systems, and/or BESS preferred.
Demonstrated experience developing or scaling project controls processes, systems, and teams across multiple concurrent projects.
Experience with project cost management, forecasting, scheduling, progress measurement, change management, and executive-level project reporting.
Experience with Primavera P6 or similar enterprise scheduling software preferred.
Experience with construction ERP/project management systems and business intelligence/reporting tools preferred.
