Description:

Mission Technologies, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), is seeking an Engineering Technician – Nuclear Propulsion (Engineering Technician 4) to support its Nuclear & Environmental Services within Maritime Operations at Newport News Shipyard. This role focuses on providing essential technical support in the Nuclear Test Engineering division, ensuring the readiness and modernization of U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion systems.

As part of HII’s Global Security group, the position involves working on critical projects related to fleet sustainment, nuclear operations, and advanced maritime defense systems. The Engineering Technician will gather, analyze, and manipulate technical data, produce engineering documentation, conduct detailed calculations, and support engineering evaluations to ensure mission-critical outcomes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance to engineers across various technical tasks related to nuclear propulsion.

  • Collect, compile, and manage technical data including material test results and engineering design changes.

  • Produce reports, engineering documentation, flow charts, schematics, and block diagrams.

  • Perform detailed mathematical calculations using established formulas for analysis and evaluation.

  • Conduct preliminary data analysis to ensure model consistency and adequacy.

  • Operate computer systems for analysis, documentation, and reporting.

  • Conduct tests and record data to assist engineering evaluations.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Associates Degree or 2-year technical degree with 6 years related experience, or High School Diploma with 8 years related (DoD/USN) experience.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

  • Prior Navy nuclear propulsion, Department of Energy, or commercial nuclear power experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Actively pursuing an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering.

  • Prior nuclear operations or work control experience.

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate.

  • Four years of related manufacturing, shipbuilding, or trades experience.
