Financial Controller

Description:

S+H Search is seeking an experienced and hands-on Controller – Job Cost Accounting to join a growing construction company generating over $50 million in annual revenue. This individual will play a key leadership role in managing the company’s financial operations, ensuring the accuracy of job cost accounting, and driving continuous improvement across accounting functions. Reporting directly to the CEO, this position offers a unique opportunity to take ownership of the department, streamline processes, and shape the company’s financial direction.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction industry accounting, deep knowledge of job cost accounting principles, and a proactive, leadership-oriented mindset. This is a fully on-site position based in Houston, Texas (77092).

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee all aspects of job cost accounting, ensuring accurate tracking of project-related expenses and revenues.

• Maintain and manage the general ledger, ensuring integrity of financial data for daily transactions, reconciliations, and month-end closing.

• Prepare, analyze, and reconcile bank accounts, accounts receivable (AR), accounts payable (AP), and cash disbursement accounts.

• Ensure accurate and timely processing of invoices, deposits, and collections in accordance with company credit policies.

• Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring all deadlines are met and reports are delivered accurately.

• Manage internal accounting controls and ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).

• Support and collaborate with internal and external auditors during annual audits.

• Provide financial insights to the CEO and executive team to support decision-making and strategic growth.

• Take ownership of the accounting department by developing improved systems, policies, and reporting structures.

• Drive process improvement initiatives and play a central role in departmental transformation and modernization.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).

• Proven experience as a Controller or Senior Accounting Manager in the construction industry.

• Strong understanding of Job Cost Accounting, project-based financial tracking, and cost allocation.

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

• Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and leadership skills.

• Hands-on approach to managing accounting operations and problem-solving.

• Comfortable working in a “cleanup” or restructuring environment, capable of leaving a lasting positive impact.

• Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.

Compensation and Benefits:

Annual Salary: $120000 – $140000
Monthly Salary Equivalent: $10000 – $11666
