Description:

Florida International University (FIU), a Top 50 preeminent public research university located in Miami, Florida, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Academic Advisor II for the College of Communication, Architecture, and The Arts (CARTA). This role plays a critical part in supporting student success, academic progression, and timely graduation through individualized academic guidance, proactive planning, and student advocacy.

The successful candidate will work closely with students, faculty, and administrative teams to ensure that students receive high-quality academic support aligned with university policies and standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential academic advising and personalized support to students to ensure academic success and progress toward graduation.

  • Utilize university systems and technology to manage a caseload of advisees, assisting them in identifying appropriate majors and maintaining academic standing.

  • Conduct advising sessions for prospective and current students, including those exploring major changes or transfer options.

  • Educate students on institutional policies, procedures, and academic resources, including Excess Credit Surcharge, Academic Amnesty, and course planning tools.

  • Offer career guidance to students and connect them with relevant university resources for professional development and career readiness.

  • Participate in enrollment processes, including quick enroll and block enroll functions for specific courses.

  • Collaborate with the Department Chair and School Directors to generate reports, analyze academic data, and provide recommendations for course scheduling and student admissions.

  • Conduct targeted outreach campaigns and group advising sessions to enhance retention and graduation rates.

  • Serve as a student advocate, identifying and escalating academic or personal barriers impacting student success.

  • Engage in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in academic advising and student support services.

  • Work with special student populations (e.g., at-risk students, transfer students, student-athletes) using academic coaching techniques and tailored support strategies.

  • Assist in college-wide projects such as transient approvals, program plan changes, excess credit petitions, and degree audits.

  • Maintain adherence to university, state, NCAA, and departmental regulations and policies.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education:

    • Master’s degree with at least 1 year of relevant advising or student services experience, or

    • Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of related experience.

  • Preferred Background: Experience in Higher Education and/or an academic advising role; degree or experience in Arts or a related field is advantageous.

  • Skills:

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for student interaction.

    • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.

    • Proficiency with academic advising software, reporting tools, and student information systems.

    • Ability to analyze data and generate actionable insights for program improvement.

    • Empathy, patience, and commitment to student success.

  • Additional Requirements:

    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and local travel as needed.

    • Must successfully pass a criminal background check prior to employment.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

  • Occasional evenings or weekends may be required based on departmental needs.
