Description:

York County, Maine, is currently accepting applications for Full-Time Corrections Officers to join the York County Corrections team. This on-site position in Alfred, ME offers a robust compensation package, professional development opportunities, and a chance to serve the public within a secure and structured correctional environment.

Corrections Officers are responsible for the safety, security, and supervision of inmates within the correctional facility. This role demands professionalism, integrity, and a high level of commitment to maintaining order and enforcing regulations while upholding the rights and welfare of inmates.

New hires are required to complete the Maine Criminal Justice Five Week Academy within one year of employment and pass the Maine ALERT Test. York County will cover the cost of the initial ALERT test.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage inmate behavior and activities

  • Enforce facility rules, regulations, and procedures

  • Conduct safety inspections and inmate searches

  • Escort inmates to and from designated areas within and outside the facility

  • Prepare incident and activity reports

  • Respond to emergencies and maintain order

  • Participate in required training and continued education

  • Promote and maintain a safe, secure, and respectful correctional environment


Qualifications:

  • Must pass the Maine ALERT Test within one year of hire (York County pays for the initial test)

  • No prior experience required; preference given to applicants with at least 1 year of corrections experience and a current Maine Corrections Certificate

  • Must meet physical and psychological requirements

  • Ability to work all shifts, including nights and weekends

  • Strong communication and decision-making skills

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.


Benefits:

  • Starting Pay: $23.32/hr

  • Shift Differentials: $3.00/hr (midnight shift), $2.00/hr (evening shift & weekends)

  • $1,500 Sign-On Bonus:

    • $750 after successful completion of Field Training

    • $750 after successful completion of probation
